Albertine G asked:

I have a sears best life 1/2 hp garage door opener and a remote that does not seem to match. The outside of the unit does not seem to show any pins or settings and I am afraid to open the unit by removing the 6-8 screws (also the unit does not seem to be super secure in the ceiling). Is there another way to reprogram the remote to this old unit?

The unit should be held up by carriage/lag bolts, not the casing bolts, so you should be able to remove the cover, no problems. In fact, I’d do it anyway just to make sure everything is tightened up and lubed, depending on whether the mounting bolts are external (usually the top front, about the drive screw/chain) or internal (bolted through to a joist). Under the external case will be the DIP switch for setting the code.

The remote could be shot, too. Did you replace the batteries? Does it have an LED that blinks when you push the button? Are the battery connections corroded?

If you can get a model number off of the motor housing, you could probably google up the owner’s manual.

The only way I know is to find the DIP switches on your unit.there areusally 4 switches each switch has three positions. Make sure the switches on your unit and your remote are in the same position. go online and see if sears will send you an instruction manuel
